This week we are focusing entirely on photography! Photography is something I have very little experience in, however it’s something I’ve always wanted to get better at. Since it’s so easy to take photos nowadays with phones, I take them all the time, but its never been anything I’m particularly proud of. I like taking pictures to capture moments that I don’t want to forget. I don’t really find myself trying to tell stories or capture emotions and feeling in my photography, but that’s something I’m interested in trying to incorporate more.
Images are a great way to tell stories, even though they’re stationary. Photography is really interesting as a medium when it comes to story telling because, while there is obviously a way the photographer intended to tell a story, the viewer might get something completely different. I think this is the case for a lot of mediums, however photos are one of the big ones. The photo itself has a story, but there’s also another story behind how and why the photographer took the photo in the first place. Photos are just teeming with story telling potential and I’m excited to explore that potential this week.
Most of my pictures involve my pets. They’re always doing something cute, but it’s often hard to actually get their pictures because they’re both camera shy. I also like taking pictures of the environment. Here are some of my recent favorites:
I wouldn’t really call any of these ‘successful’ just because almost no thought went into taking them. My approach when it comes to taking photos is to take a whole bunch, then pick out the ones that turned out the best.
Reading the Telling Stories in Photos article makes me look at photography in a much more professional lens (haha, get it?). The list of things you should think about when taking a photo are kind of overwhelming for someone just starting out, but definitely doable. I’m excited to work on my photography skills this week and hopefully get a little better at it!
